How to Make a Shutdown Button for Windows 10

When you shut down Windows 10, you usually go through three steps: Start -> Power -> Shut Down. It does not that take long to do this, but it’s cumbersome to do it every day.

If your keyboard has a shutdown button, you can simply shut down Windows 10 by pressing it, but most keyboards don’t have it.

You can reduce the number of steps by creating a shutdown button according to the procedure below.

1. Right click on the desktop and select the New and click on Shortcut button.

2. Enter

shutdown /s /t 0

or

shutdown -s -t 0

and then click on Next

3. Enter a name for the shortcut. If you don’t come up with a suitable name, just name it “Shutdown” and click on Finish.

4. Right click on the newly created icon on the desktop and click on Properties.

5. Click Change Icon, and you can see a message box as written below

The file C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe contains no icons.

Choose an icon from the list or specify a different file.

Click on OK to change the icon.

6. Choose the icon to use and click on OK. There are three icons that are good to use because they look like a power button. Choose according to your preference.

7. Click on Apply and OK

8. Right click on the shortcut icon, then choose Pin to Start or Pin to Taskbar.

In this case, I recommend you choose Pin to Taskbar. If you choose Pin to Start, you still need to go through two steps (Start -> Shutdown) to shut down Windows 10. On the other hand, if you choose Pin to Taskbar, you can shut down Windows 10 at once by clicking on shutdown button. In addition, if you put the shutdown button at the left end of Taskbar, you can also exit Windows 10 by pressing Windows key + 1. (You can run the app pinned to the taskbar with Windows key + number.)

Alternatively, you can just leave the icon created on the desktop and double-click it to exit.
